Tips & Toes

When I used to work at ITP Publishing, me and a handful of other women who edited magazines would cross the street to this little slice of heaven to get mani-pedis: Tips & Toes in Arjaan Tower remains one of my favorite place to get pampered in Dubai. Small, unassuming and with some of the best technicians in town, I often prefer it to the noisy nail spas in malls or the pricy ones in hotels. They have a row of chairs with purple pillows, dim lighting and spa music that helps you zone out the world. You feel zen as soon as you set foot inside.   When you walk in, there's a selection of colours to your right. I went with...

Rove Downtown

Reviewed for Holidays in Heels by Anita Quade, magazine editor extraordinaire! Meet the new artsy hotel on the block – Rove Downtown Dubai has been open just over a year and has already captured our creative hearts with its urban approach to hotel stays. Modern travelers, breathe a sigh of relief: this is the place to indulge your vagabond spirit at a value-orientated price tag. The hotel overlooks the towering Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall and is nestled right in the heartbeat of Downtown Dubai. It’s about modern meets minimal at this bolt hole, with the philosophy of “Exploring Without Borders”. Everything is set up for the busy modern traveler – there’s a 24-hour work space for busy execs, 24-hour gym and...

Grand Millenium Hotel

This unassuming hotel tucked into Barsha Heights, between Mall of the Emirates and the Dubai Marina, has secrets to share. They all revolve around one thing: having one of the best nights out on the town. Enter Lucky Voice Dubai. When I was invited to try the karaoke bar import from London's Soho, I was actually really nervous to sing in public, outside of a shower or my car, for the first time. I'd been to plenty of karaoke bars before and somehow always managed to avoid singing. But how can I blog about an experience without doing it? *gulp* The Band Here's where I was in for a surprise: Lucky Voice Dubai is so much more than a karaoke bar. It's 10,000 square feet...

Manzil Downtown

Sometimes, the perfect vacation is at your doorstep. For a dream staycation, I ventured a far enough away from my home in Dubai Marina to spend some time in the downtown area at a remarkable, hidden gem of a hotel: Manzil Downtown. Most will be familiar with the hotel's trendy sister hotel, VIDA. Manzil Downtown has the same cool vibe that fuses modern design with Arab influence - and it's not cheesy. It's a home-away-from-home experience unlike any other. How amazing is that bedroom?! But first...

Fairmont the Palm

Fairmont the Palm is a place of many happy memories for me. It's where my dear friend, Zahirah Variawa, had her fairytale wedding, where I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary, and where I met fashion illustrator extraordinaire Megan Hess. I honestly don't have enough good things to say about the relaxed, elegant vacation vibe of this happy resort on the manmade Palm Jumeirah island in Dubai. You feel it as soon as the valet has whisked your bags away and you enter the spacious lobby filled with flowers and colourful art. Gardens, sea and sun...

Park Hyatt Dubai

A green hideaway set smack in the middle of Dubai's old town overlooking the Creek - and just 2 km from Dubai's airport - the Park Hyatt Dubai is a destination in and of itself. It's got acres of rolling hills ideal for a round of golf or a round of drinks as you admire the scenery. One of the oldest hotel establishments in our young town, it's also one of the finest. It's reviewed for Holidays in Heels by girl-about-town Anita Buys, a lovely South African presenter, moderator and inspirational woman. Check out Anita's blog: for a dose of fashion and fun in Dubai! The Welcome Meet me in the hotel lobby!   This beautiful resort is big enough to...

Kozma and Kozma Salon

Sometimes, when you can't get away but you desperately need a holiday, there's nothing like a day of pampering. We are pretty spoiled in Dubai with a zillion world class hotel spas and salons to choose from, so I expected Kozma and Kozma, a new beauty salon on Al Wasl Road, to be just another great spa. My jaw actually dropped when I walked in to the villa and saw a spiral staircase, a colourful chandelier and rows of candy jars on the wall. I have officially entered Willy Wonka's dream fantasy for all things girly! (The hot pink branding should have given it away :D)   Get the Party Started After 'checking in' at the reception, we were lead to the sunken...

Kalm Spa

Nestled in Palm Jumeirah is a little known secret that the residents of the palm like to keep to themselves: Kalm Spa. I felt like I'd finally gotten a break from the treadmill of life for a while when I followed signs that read: "Beach Club" and came upon this beauty spa that has the sea to the right and green gardens to the left. It's always a good sign when you walk in on a random Tuesday at a random hour and the place is packed. I opted for a signature massage to relieve hours of sitting in front of a computer - although the real escapism seemed to be taking place at the mani-pedi stations. You can recline in business-class style armchairs that...
